south africa. >> reporter: bundle up. it is still cold out here. i'm kiet do. we have a live report. yeah, freezing temperatures again around the bay area. freeze warnings are up. what a chilly day. this is the third day in a row of freezing temperatures showing up outside. some of those numbers dropping off under clear skies this morning into the 20s and 30s. now 23 in santa rosa. 28 in concord. 39 in san francisco. and 30 degrees in livermore. so a very cold start to the day again freeze warnings until 9:00. then clouds roll in in the middle of the day. plan on highs only in the 40s and 50s. this afternoon we could see a little rain. and then tonight, cold enough to see snow on the local mountains down to 2500 feet. a great place to go it weekend. >> reporter: after this week i think i'm just going to lay in

bed with my electric blanket, soup, hot chocolate. i think i earned that. so we're live in cambrian park in san jose. we were told to look for frosty cars and i think i found the only one in the city. here it is. the frost light than yesterday. yesterday we had to scrape it off. now it's dusting off. you get a couple of days in a row of cold subfreezing temperatures and it rings out all the moisture -- wrings out all the moisture out of the sky. so out here it's cold and dry. speaking of wringing, that sound you hear over chattering teeth is the cash register. on a normal day, this shoe repair business in walnut creek does 5 pairs of boots. now they are up to 40 a day. >> when the weather gets cold it's busy. >> reporter: have you tried to get an appointment to fix your heater lately? good luck. tricity heating just put in a new digital thermostat in this antioch insurance offers.

and sausalito. let's go flying. here's a live look at some of our sensors now coming through the altamont pass. the slowest traffic is from north flynn to vasco and then a few more brake lights to get closer to hacienda towards 680. travel times should be 23 minutes between the altamont pass and 680. that's your latest "kcbs traffic." back to you guys. the world celebrating the life of nelson mandela this morning. the former south african president died yesterday at the age of 95. a live look at a memorial outside his home in johannesburg. mourners had been visiting since they learned of his death. cbs reporter susan mcginnis with how the entire world is reacting. >> reporter: south africans sang and danced outside his home in johannesburg. the outpouring began in the middle of the night when word spread that the man they called madiba which means father died. >> i was sad. but i'm also happy he gets to rest in peace. >> reporter: mandela spent 27 years in prison because he fought against apartheid.

south africa's system of legalized racism. but as desmond tutu noted this morning he forgave those who imprisoned him. >> this one has become a global icon symbol of reconciliation. >> reporter: upon his release, mandela would go on to become south africa's first black president in 1994. years later, he would meet the man that would become america's first black president. >> we've lost one of the most influential courageous good human beings that any of us will share time with on this earth. no longer belongs to us. he belongs to the ages. >> reporter: not far from the white house, mourners gathered at mandela's statue outside south africa's embassy. >> intellectually i think we try to prepare ourselves but emotionally it's not that easy. >> reporter: flags at the white house and other federal buildings will fly at half- staff in honor of mandela through monday. susan mcginnis, cbs news,

washington. >> there will be at least 10 days of mourning in south africa including a massive state funeral on december 15. four months after he was released from prison, nelson mandela visited the united states and more than 70,000 people packed the oakland coliseum to see him back in june of 1990. kpix 5's anne makovec in the newsroom with memories of his bay area connections. it was the last stop of his united states visit that year. reporter: the east bay played a key role in the anti- apartheid movement and local leaders are remembering his visit and legacy this morning. >> it is you, you the people of oakland the people of the bay area who have given me and my delegation progress to continue the struggling. >> reporter: that was mandela speaking at the packed oakland coliseum the final stop on his

1990 u.s. freedom tour. then congressman ron dellums was the first to introduce anti- apartheid legislation back in 1972 and seven years later the city of berkeley became the first in the nation to divest from south africa. assemblywoman nancy skinner was part of that movement. >> it was so thrilling that we americans, that we east bay residents, could have been part of something with that kind of global impact. >> reporter: a lone rose left at an oakland monument memorializing mandela last night a reminder of the impact the leader will always have. >> there have been lots of people in our lifetimes who had positions and have passed on but nobody has ever matched the incredible inspiration and humanity of nelson mandela. >> reporter: that was willie brown, who puts mandela in the same group as martin luther king, jr. and john f. kennedy. but he calls mandela the "real" leader.

investigation now under way into the construction of a barge by google. a commission will determine whether google and the owners of a pier on treasure island have the necessary permits. google says it is already making changes requested by the coast guard. google reportedly plans to to open a retail store. governor brown has a strong approval rating as he heads into a possible re-election campaign. yesterday numbers show a field poll finds nearly 6 in 10 registered voters approve of his performance. 52% say they would vote for him. his closest challenger lieutenant governor able maldonado is backed by 11%. the governor hasn't said if he will seek another term. the batkid returns to san francisco. 5-year-old miles scott of siskiyou county won our hearts last month as he saved the city from evil villains. that was his dream as he battled and beat cancer.

reporter: people are scraping ice off their cars as freezing rain falls across parts of texas. a layer of slush and ice is making the roads dangerous. it's all part of a wintry blast that's hitting much of the u.s. bringing frigid temperatures, ice and snow. >> i think the stuff is pretty froze up, a little icy. >> reporter: snow, ice and sleet combined to cause traffic trouble across the state of oklahoma. utility companies are scrambling to avoid power outages. >> an ice storm is absolutely our worst situation. >> reporter: the national weather service issued a winter storm warning for the louisville area for friday. >> hurry up, get all your trucks ready but then we have to wait to see when is the rain going to change over to snow and sleet. >> reporter: many stores across the mid-south are sold out of sat, generators and ice scrapers. >> supply was low in all those stores around. so i'm happy i was able to find some things to be prepared. >> reporter: these conditions are prompting the cancellation of flights, sports games and holiday festivities across the country. marlie hall for cbs news. believe it or not, we might get a little snow ourselves.

>> i know. on those peaks there, right, lawrence? >> hopefully we don't get temperatures like that. it's cold enough outside right now again back into the deep freeze in the bay area. i think we are going to see some crop damage now three successive days of these temperatures dropping off in the 20s. 21 degrees right now in fairfield. 22 in the napa valley. and 23 in santa rosa. 30s inside the bay. another very cold start to the morning. freeze warnings up until 9:00 this morning. but then we are going to start to see some changes increasing clouds toward the middle of the day. and then showers developing this afternoon. with that cold air trapped here yeah we could see a little snow over mountain peaks. temperatures slowly warming up toward this next week but for now just a slow-moving cold arctic air mass and now with this low developing on the back side that's going to move in to bring rain today and the snow later on tonight. computer models picking up on it clouds increasing toward the middle of the day and then toward the evening hours, could be wet for the commute ride on the way home. that storm system overnight into early tomorrow morning

divest from any corporations that do business with the apartheid government. and eventually, the entire board of regents voted to do so in 1986. so it was a movement that started small and grew large. >> just amazing. anne makovec live in the newsroom, thank you. people having paying respects to mr. mandela at his home in johannesburg with a memorial. >> cbs correspondent alfonso van marsh joins us. this is a big loss for people around the world. >> reporter: that's true, frank and michelle. you can add to that list of people the current president jay come zuma who went to the johannesburg home of nelson mandela to pay his condolences. last night he broke the news to a nation. south africans broke down in tears as they visited a memorial growing outside nelson mandela's home in johannesburg.

[ singing ] >> reporter: but it is also a celebration. [ singing ] >> reporter: which started in the middle of the night when it was announced the man they called madiba had died. >> obviously, i'm very shocked and saddened and really hurtful. >> reporter: people are paying tribute to the former president. >> i think he was a great man and will be remembered. >> reporter: here in south africa news of his death is splashed across the headlines of almost every paper including this one talking about the loss of the father of the nation and this newspaper in zulu saying, go well, madiba. >> we have lost our father. >> reporter: desmond tutu held a prayer service for him in a cape town church this morning. the two men were friends and both won nobel peace prizes for their work as leaders. >> god, thank you for the gift of madiba. >> reporter: his body was taken from his home in johannesburg

go right over it. good news if you are waking up this morning driving to work your car is parked outside it should be pretty easy-going this morning for some businesses, though, this cold weather is profiteddable. >> the temperature is dropping and that means cold, hard cash. in walnut creek, sweaters on the shelf since black friday have been selling. >> over the last two weeks our sales have jumped over 500% on sweaters and jackets. the cold wind, like, whoa, now it's time to layer up. >> reporter: at the shop next door hot chocolate sales are up 60% and ice cream sales are still up. all righty. so this is ice cream i left here at 4:00 this morning. it's still just kind of melted and mushy right now. so i'm going to drink this otter pop instead of eating it. right now for a 14-year-old girl from washington state. here's a picture of elizabeth romero. the teenager disappeared wednesday afternoon. police believe 19-year-old eduardo flores rosales abducted her. he was last seen driving a 2000 green ford escape with temporary washington state registration. chp believes they may pass through the bay area on their way to mexico. 6:39 now. months after vandals broke out windows in a downtown oakland building one building remains boarded up. many are calling it a big eyesore. these windows tremendous sears store at telegraph and 12th. it's boarded up for five months. they were damaged in rioting. neighbors and business owners say leaving the windows broken is a bad way to do business. >> like they could care less about the city of oakland. we just want you to come and spender money but we don't really care. >> there was something in the windows more people would come

department. some good news unemployment down to a five-year low. here now to chat kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. >> reporter: good morning. hopefully we'll book some nice gains for the stock market today. it's been a rough week. but the labor department's jobs report for november came in better than expected. a gain of 203,000 jobs lowering the unemployment rate from 7.3 to 7%. that is a five-year low. and a good sign thrashed to the unemployment rate -- in regards to the unemployment rate the labor participation rate increased. in prior drops in the unemployment rate we have seen fewer people looking for work. this is a good sign. it comes after october's gain of 200,000 jobs and shows there is further strength building in the labor market. that's good news overall for the economy. could push the fed towards tapering its bond issues sooner than some people may like but this is good news all the way around. let's look at the market. it is reacting in a positive

champion against the top seed in the whole conference. and we are rivals and we get at each other. we'll have a lot of law enforcement. no problems, class fans. >> why are you putting cops in seattle gear. >> i'm not sitting in front of this because i have any affinity for the seahawks myself. but we'll have police officers in this and if people are given a hard time to anybody wearing a number 3, that's not inside the stadium playing quarterback for the seahawks, you could find yourself in jail. >> it's really interesting phenomenon. you know, you guys you understand that a lot of times especially at this time of the season tons of people hundreds show up at the game and they don't have tickets and roll in and get a place in the parking lot and that's where they are staying for the game, right? that's where a lot of the trouble happens. >> true. there's a ton of people, it's a very expensive ticket. especially for this game. >> how much are they going for or the streets?

>> word has it 300 anywhere over $4,000 for tickets. >> okay. so if you can't get in what do we have? >> you have people that just want to go to the game and be in the energy. we have people that will set up jumbo screen tvs. >> i have seen that. [ laughter ] >> i don't know if you have seen that. they unload a jumbo screen tv a weber in the parking lot. i have seen them with couches and everything else will they be allowed to do that? >> no, we clear the parking lot after kickoff. we have doing that for years. it's saved a lot of trouble later. if you are planning to visit and just hang out in the parking lot, it's not going to be allowed. come, have a great time. >> what else isn't going to be allowed? >> giving anybody a heart time that's wearing seahawks jerseys. obviously when the gates open, the energy will be high. i'll be walking the parking lot myself before the game. there will be a lot of cops out engaging talking to kids, again, we want a fun time in the spirited rivalry but no violence. >> we have to be honest 49ers

francisco five-year-old miles scott saved the city from evil villains last month. that was his dream as he battled and beat cancer. miles will be back tomorrow to help the make a wish foundation leading a 5k walk/run that starts at the aquatic park. the world mourns the loss of nelson mandela. the former south african president died at the age of 95. deborah reports from johannesburg. reporter: south africans woke up to the news that nelson mandela was dead. the announcement was made around midnight south african time. many were unaware. people have been flocking to his home in black and white fitting for a man whose legacy was defined by reconciliation, by reaching out a hand to the white minority in south africa and embracing them as part of south africa's fledgling democracy when he was released after 27 years in jail. nelson mandela's body has been taken to one military in
